📞 Call (647) 677-003729% of Toronto homes were built in 1960 or earlier and another 29% between 1961 and 1980. Whatever furnace those houses started with is long gone, but the house around today's furnace still shapes the repair:
| When the house was built | What we check first |
|---|---|
| 1960 or earlier | Ducts added to a house built for other heating, tiny return grilles, and how the furnace vents now that the old chimney may be lined or unused |
| 1961 to 1980 | A bungalow or split-level furnace several replacements in: igniter, flame sensor, inducer motor and the age of the gas valve |
| 1981 to 2000 | Control board and blower motor, plus a heat exchanger inspection on any furnace past 15 years |
| 2001 or later | Condensate traps, drain lines and pressure switches on high-efficiency furnaces, then thermostat and Wi-Fi settings |

Semi-detached and row houses make up 12% of Toronto's homes. Their furnaces tend to sit in small basements or closets, and on a high-efficiency furnace the plastic intake and exhaust pipes often exit into a narrow gap between houses. That gap fills with snow, leaves or a neighbour's fence, and a blocked pipe shuts the furnace down. We check the venting on every call, and these are the other faults we see most in these homes:

Toronto has 47,810 homes counted as apartments or flats in a duplex, many of them basement suites. Often the main floor and the suite share one furnace and one thermostat, so when it stops, two households are cold. If the suite has its own thermostat on a single furnace, the problem may be a zone damper or a control rather than the furnace itself. Tell us how the house is split when you call, and whether a tenant needs to let us in.

If you smell gas, get everyone outside, then call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 from there. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911. Do not restart a furnace the gas utility has shut off, or one whose rollout switch keeps tripping. Once the house is declared safe, we find and fix the cause.

Almost half of Toronto households (48%) rent. Chapter 497 of the Toronto Municipal Code says a landlord who pays for the heat must hold every area of a rented unit at a minimum of 21°C between October 1 and May 15. When a furnace in a rented house, duplex or basement suite stops, the tenant tells the landlord, and the City asks tenants to call 311 if the heat is still off after 24 hours. Landlords and property managers can reach us at any hour.
