How It Works

What a Heat Pump Does

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it. In summer it pulls heat out of your home, just like an air conditioner. In winter it runs in reverse and pulls heat from the outdoor air into your home, even when it is well below freezing.

Cold-climate heat pumps are built for Canadian winters, and the high-efficiency models we install are rated to -25°C. Many homes keep their gas furnace as backup: the heat pump does most of the heating, and the furnace takes over on the coldest nights. That setup is often called a hybrid or dual-fuel system.

Is It Right for You?

When a Heat Pump Makes Sense

❄️
Your AC needs replacing
A heat pump costs more than an air conditioner but also heats, so replacing an old AC is the natural time to switch.
🔥
You want to burn less gas
The heat pump handles most of the heating, so your furnace runs far less often.
🔌
You heat with baseboards or oil
Homes heated by electric baseboards or oil usually see the biggest change in running costs.
💡
Lower energy use
Heat pumps can use up to 50% less energy than traditional heating systems.
🏠
You want one system
One outdoor unit cools in summer and heats in winter, with a single thermostat.
🍁
A federal rebate is coming
Ottawa has announced a National Heat Pump Rebate. It is not open yet, and we will post details on our rebates page when it opens.

Winter Comfort

Living With a Heat Pump in Winter

A heat pump heats differently from a furnace. Instead of short bursts of hot air, it runs for longer at a lower output, so the air from the vents feels warm rather than hot and rooms hold an even temperature. Most homeowners do best by picking a comfortable setting and leaving it there: a deep setback overnight can make the system call on backup heat to catch up in the morning, which costs more than it saves. With a hybrid setup, the furnace takes over automatically on the coldest days. Seeing steam from the outdoor unit? That is usually the defrost cycle, explained on our heat pump repair page.

Common Questions

Heat Pump FAQ

How much does a heat pump cost in Brampton?
A central heat pump typically costs $4,500 to $22,000 installed, before HST, depending on your home size and the model. Most townhouses and semis fall between $5,500 and $12,000. Renting costs $54.95 a month.
Do heat pumps work in Ontario winters?
Yes. Cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below freezing, and the high-efficiency models we install are rated to -25°C. A gas furnace can stay as backup for the coldest nights.
Can I keep my gas furnace?
Yes. Many Brampton homes add a heat pump to their existing furnace. The heat pump handles the cooling and most of the heating, and the furnace takes over on the coldest days.
Will a heat pump lower my energy bills?
Heat pumps can use up to 50% less energy than traditional heating systems. How much you save depends on your home, your current system and energy prices.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
Most central heat pump installs are done in one day. Some homes need electrical or ductwork changes, and we tell you when we quote.
Are there heat pump rebates right now?
A federal heat pump rebate has been announced but is not open yet. See financing and rebates for what is available today.
Do you service heat pumps you didn't install?
Yes, every make. See heat pump repair.
Should I turn my heat pump down at night?
Small setbacks are fine. Large ones can make the system use backup heat to catch up in the morning, so most owners leave a heat pump at a steady setting.
Does a heat pump need a special electrical circuit?
Yes, it runs on its own 240-volt circuit. We check your panel at the free assessment and tell you before you get your price if any electrical work is needed.
