📞 Call (647) 677-0037In cold weather, frost builds up on the outdoor coil and the heat pump melts it off with a defrost cycle. During defrost the outdoor fan stops, you may see steam rising from the unit and hear a whoosh, and the air indoors can feel cooler for a few minutes. That is normal. It is not normal when the outdoor unit stays covered in solid ice, the defrost never seems to finish, or the house keeps getting colder.
Try these first. If the heat pump still isn't keeping up, call us at (647) 677-0037.
Many Ontario homes pair a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump heats most of the year and the furnace takes over in deep cold. When the switch-over setting is wrong, the system leans on gas too often or leaves you cold. We check the thermostat set-up along with both pieces of equipment. If the furnace is the problem, see furnace repair.

A heat pump runs all year, heating in winter and cooling in summer, so it works harder than a furnace or an air conditioner alone. A yearly service, ideally in the fall, keeps it efficient through the winter. A typical service covers cleaning the coils and filters, checking the refrigerant level and electrical connections, and testing the system in both modes. Maintenance is included on every GT rental heat pump.
We repair heat pumps whoever installed them, including:
Heat pumps usually last around 15 years. Newer cold-climate models keep heating at far lower outdoor temperatures than units from 10 or 15 years ago, so on an older system with a major fault, replacement can pay off in comfort as well as cost. If you want to compare, see heat pump installation, from $54.95/mo to rent.
We repair and service heat pumps throughout Brampton, including Mount Pleasant, Credit Valley, Castlemore, Bramalea, Heart Lake, Churchville and Fletchers Creek. Outside Brampton? Call (647) 677-0037 to check we cover your area.
