Brampton's tap water is moderately hard, which leaves scale on taps and glass and inside water heaters. GT Home Services installs Excalibur Chlor-A-Soft softeners that soften the water and remove chlorine in one unit, from $2,111 installed or $25.99 a month to rent.
*Includes standard installation only. Any extra work your home needs is quoted before we start.
Prices before HST. Purchased softeners carry a 20-year unlimited warranty.
๐ Call (647) 677-0037Brampton gets its water from Lake Ontario through Peel Region's South Peel system. Peel Region's 2025 water quality report puts its hardness at 120 to 130 mg/L, or 7.0 to 7.6 grains per gallon, and calls it moderately hard. Heated hard water forms scale and a white film, and it leaves scum with ordinary soap. Navien, which makes the tankless water heaters we install, recommends a softener for water this hard, or a yearly flush of the heat exchanger without one.

Inside the softener tank is a bed of resin beads. As hard water flows through, the beads trap the calcium and magnesium and swap them for sodium, so softened water comes out the other side. When the beads are full, the softener regenerates: it rinses the resin with salty brine from the brine tank and flushes the captured minerals down the drain, usually overnight on a set schedule. The size you choose, in grains, is how much hardness the resin can hold between regenerations.
Chlor-A-Soft is a combination unit for city water. It removes the calcium and magnesium that cause scale, and it removes chlorine, chemicals and odours at the same time. Excalibur makes it in Barrie, Ontario, and it uses 80% less salt than traditional softeners. Pick the size that matches your household:

Prices are before HST. Buying includes the softener, brine tank and all connections, a full system test and calibration, a labour warranty and a 20-year unlimited warranty. Renting includes installation, 12 years of parts and labour, annual maintenance, and salt refills coordinated for you.
Check the brine tank about once a month and keep it at least partly full of softener salt, either pellets or crystals. If the salt forms a hard crust with an empty space underneath, called a salt bridge, the softener can't make brine; break it up gently with a broom handle. Going away for a few weeks? The softener only regenerates as it needs to, so it can be left on. A yearly check keeps the valve and resin working as they should.
Softener not regenerating, salt bridging in the brine tank, or hard water coming back? We service and repair water softeners, including units we didn't install. Typical repairs cost $150 to $450 and include a diagnostic inspection, a salt check and a system test.
A softener treats hardness. If your concern is taste, odour or sediment, see whole home water filtration, which also covers under-sink reverse osmosis for drinking water. Chlor-A-Soft handles softening and chlorine removal in one unit.
We install softeners across Brampton, Mississauga and the GTA. In the Niagara Region? See water softeners in Niagara.
