Central Air

Central AC Installation and Replacement

A central air conditioner cools the whole house through your existing ductwork. The outdoor unit sits beside the house and connects to a coil above your furnace, and the furnace blower pushes the cool air through your vents.

We install Lennox and Carrier central air in three levels: standard, high and premium efficiency, the Good, Better and Best options in our quote tool. A higher-efficiency unit costs more upfront and less to run every summer.

Replacing an existing air conditioner starts at $4,000 installed. If your home has never had central air, we quote it after a free visit, because it can need a new coil, refrigerant lines and electrical work.

  • Every AC installation includes
  • Supply and installation of the AC unit
  • Refrigerant charge and leak test
  • Thermostat setup and programming
  • Full system test and commissioning
  • Labour warranty
Sizing

What Size Air Conditioner Does Your Home Need?

An AC that is too big cools the house fast but shuts off before it pulls the humidity out, so rooms feel damp and clammy. One that is too small runs all afternoon and still falls behind. We size every system with a load calculation based on your square footage, insulation, windows and layout, and start from these home sizes:

Home sizeTypical homeWhat we look at
Under 1,000 sq ftCondo or small homeOften a smaller unit, or a ductless system if there are no ducts
1,000 to 1,800 sq ftTownhouse or semi-detachedWindow area and how hot the top floor gets
1,800 to 2,800 sq ftDetached homeNumber of storeys and the size of your ductwork
2,800+ sq ftLarge detached homeWhether one system covers every floor evenly
Time to Replace?

Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Replacing

Not sure? Our technician will tell you plainly whether a repair or a new unit makes more sense. If you think it can be fixed, see AC repair.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ
It can't keep up
The house stays warm on hot afternoons even with the AC running nonstop.
๐Ÿ”ง
Repairs keep coming
You have paid for repairs more than once in the last couple of summers.
๐Ÿงช
It runs on R-22
Older units use R-22 refrigerant, which has been phased out, so topping one up is costly.
๐Ÿ’ก
Hydro bills keep climbing
An ageing unit uses more electricity to give you the same cooling.
๐Ÿ”Š
Loud, or blowing warm air
Grinding, buzzing or warm air from the vents can point to a failing compressor.
๐ŸงŠ
Ice or water at the unit
Ice on the copper lines or water around the indoor coil usually means a refrigerant or drain problem.

Efficiency

AC Efficiency Ratings, Explained

Central air conditioners carry an efficiency rating called SEER2, a seasonal measure of how much cooling you get for each unit of electricity. The higher the number, the less hydro the unit uses over a summer. Our Good, Better and Best levels step up in efficiency: a Better or Best unit costs more upfront and less to run every July and August. Two-stage and variable-speed units also spend more time running at low power, which keeps rooms at a steadier temperature and pulls more humidity out of the air, so the house feels cooler at the same setting.

Two-Storey Homes

Why Your Upstairs Is Hotter, and What Helps

In most Brampton two-storey homes and townhouses the bedrooms upstairs run warmer than the main floor in summer. Heat rises, the roof bakes all afternoon, and ductwork in older homes was laid out for heating first. A correctly sized AC is the starting point, and a few habits help: close the blinds on south and west windows in the afternoon, partly close the supply vents in the basement so more air goes upstairs, and run the furnace fan longer on hot days to mix the air between floors. A two-stage or variable-speed AC runs longer at low power, which also evens out the floors. Where one room or an attic bedroom never cools down, a ductless mini-split for that room is often the fix.

Rent or Buy

Rent Your Air Conditioner Instead

Rather not pay upfront? Central air rents for $44.95 a month with $0 upfront. Installation, repairs and a yearly maintenance visit are included, the plan transfers if you move, and you can cancel after the first year. See AC rental, or compare financing options.

No Ductwork?

Homes Without Ducts

Condos, older homes heated by radiators, and additions often have no ductwork for central air. A ductless mini-split cools one room or several without ducts, and heats them in winter too. See ductless mini-split installation.

Common Questions

AC Installation FAQ

How much does a new air conditioner cost in Brampton?
Replacing a central AC starts at $4,000 supplied and installed, before HST. The price depends on the size and efficiency you choose. A home that has never had central air is quoted after a free visit.
Can you install my AC the same day?
In most cases, yes. We carry common units in stock. Call (647) 677-0037 in the morning to check today's availability.
How long does an AC installation take?
A central AC replacement usually takes 4 to 6 hours, done in one visit.
Should I replace my AC and furnace together?
If both are old, it often makes sense: they share the blower and the coil, and one visit means less disruption. We can quote both. See furnace installation.
Can I rent an air conditioner instead of buying?
Yes. Central air rents for $44.95 a month with $0 upfront, with repairs and yearly maintenance included. See AC rental.
What does an AC tune-up include?
A full system inspection, coil cleaning, a refrigerant level check and a performance report, for $150 to $250.
Do you install AC outside Brampton?
Yes, in Mississauga, Toronto, Vaughan, Oakville and the rest of our service area.
What does SEER2 mean?
It is the seasonal cooling efficiency rating under the current test standard. A higher SEER2 number means the unit uses less electricity for the same cooling.
Do I need a new thermostat with a new AC?
Not always. Thermostat setup and programming are part of every AC install, and we tell you if your current thermostat can't run the new system properly.
Why is my upstairs so hot even with the AC on?
Heat rises and the roof heats the top floor, so upstairs often runs warmer. Closing afternoon blinds, sending more air upstairs and running the fan longer help. A room that never cools may need a mini-split.
