What We Fix

Common Furnace Problems We Repair

Most furnace breakdowns come down to a handful of parts. Here are the symptoms homeowners call about and what usually causes them.

🥶
No heat at all
The furnace runs but the house stays cold, or it won't start. A failed hot surface igniter, a dirty flame sensor, a tripped limit switch or a thermostat fault are the usual causes.
🔁
Turns on and off constantly
Short cycling wears parts out fast. It often points to a clogged filter, overheating that trips the limit switch, or a furnace that is too big for the home.
💨
Blowing cold air
Air moves but it isn't warm. The burners may not be lighting, the flame sensor may be shutting them off, or the thermostat fan may be set to On instead of Auto.
🔊
Banging, squealing or rattling
A bang at start-up can mean delayed ignition. Squealing usually comes from the blower motor or its belt and bearings. Rattling can be a loose panel or a failing inducer motor.
💧
Water around the furnace
High-efficiency furnaces make condensate. A blocked drain line, cracked trap or failed condensate pump leaves water on the floor and can shut the furnace down.
⚠️
Error light flashing
Most modern furnaces blink a code on the control board, visible through a small window in the panel. Count the flashes and tell us when you call.
Before You Call

Four Checks That Can Save You a Service Call

Run through these first. If none of them brings the heat back, call us at (647) 677-0037.

  1. ThermostatSet it to Heat and at least 2 degrees above the room temperature. If the screen is blank, replace the batteries.
  2. Furnace filterA filter packed with dust can overheat the furnace until a safety switch shuts it off. If you can't see light through it, replace it.
  3. Power switch and breakerYour furnace has an on/off switch that looks like a light switch, on or near the unit. Make sure it is on and the breaker hasn't tripped.
  4. Pipes outsideOn high-efficiency furnaces, snow and ice can block the white plastic intake and exhaust pipes on the outside wall. Clear them gently by hand.

Maintenance

Furnace Tune-Ups and Maintenance

A yearly tune-up catches worn parts before they fail on the coldest night of the year. Early fall is the best time to book, before the first cold snap and the busy season.

Annual maintenance is included on every GT rental furnace. If you own your furnace, a tune-up costs $120 to $200. Some manufacturers also ask for proof of regular maintenance before they honour a parts warranty.

  • What a furnace tune-up includes
  • Full inspection of the furnace
  • Burner and heat exchanger check
  • Filter replacement
  • Carbon monoxide test and safety report

Repair or Replace?

When a Repair Makes Sense, and When It Doesn't

Most furnaces last 15 to 20 years. A repair usually makes sense when the furnace is younger than that and one part has failed. When the furnace is near the end of its life and the repair quote is large, a new furnace often costs less over the next few winters. Our technician will tell you plainly which way we would go. If replacement is the better call, see furnace installation in Brampton, from $43.99/mo to rent or $3,222 to buy, or read 5 signs your furnace needs replacing.

Common Questions

Furnace Repair FAQ

How much does furnace repair cost in Brampton?
Most furnace repairs cost $350 to $950 plus HST, depending on the part and your furnace model. A tune-up is $120 to $200. We agree a flat-rate price with you before the repair starts.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency furnace repair?

Yes. We repair all makes and models, including Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Trane and older builder-grade furnaces, whoever installed them.
My furnace is rented from another company. Can you fix it?
If another company owns your furnace, repairs are usually its job under your rental agreement, so call it first. If you are unhappy with that company, ask us about switching to a GT rental or buying your own furnace.
My furnace was red-tagged. What should I do?
A red tag means a gas technician found an unsafe condition, and the gas to the furnace may be shut off. Don't use it. Call us and we will tell you whether it can be repaired safely. Read your rights when a furnace is red-tagged.
Is a yearly furnace tune-up worth it?
A tune-up cleans and checks the burners, inspects the heat exchanger and tests for carbon monoxide. It also catches worn igniters and motors before they fail on a cold night.
Is GT Home Services licensed to repair gas furnaces?
Yes. GT Home Services is TSSA-registered (#000307842), and our gas work is done by a TSSA G2-certified gas technician. We are licensed and insured.
