The City's Woodward Avenue plant supplies Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Dundas, Ancaster, Waterdown and Glanbrook with Lake Ontario water, drawn through two intakes almost a kilometre offshore. The City calls it medium hard, at about 120 mg/L. A few rural communities have their own wells and much harder water: the City lists typical hardness of 390 mg/L in Carlisle, 360 in Freelton and 500 in Greensville, while Lynden's is far softer at 51. On those wells a softener protects water heaters and humidifiers from heavy scale.
