Central Air in a House Built for Heat

Close to two-thirds of Etobicoke homes (62%) predate 1981, and most were built with ductwork sized for a furnace alone. When central air came later, the small ducts and returns stayed, so the AC can work perfectly and still struggle with the rooms farthest from it. Before we blame the equipment, we measure airflow at the vents and check the coil above the furnace for dirt or ice.

Etobicoke Homes

AC Repair for Every Kind of Etobicoke Home

🏡
Bungalows and two-storeys
About 37% of homes are detached or semi-detached. The condenser sits in a side or back yard, and the coil above the basement furnace.
🏢
Tower suites
43% of homes are in buildings of five or more storeys. Most suites rely on the building, so a floor-wide problem goes to management.
🏘️
Townhouses
About 5%. Units on patios or in narrow side yards trap heat, so we check clearance as part of the repair.
🧊
Ductless
Mini-splits in suites, additions and older houses with no ducts. Indoor heads, drains and outdoor units, any brand.

Common Faults

Five Air Conditioner Faults and What Causes Them

What you noticeThe usual cause
The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spinA failed capacitor or fan motor
Air from the vents is not coldLow refrigerant from a leak, or a dirty outdoor coil
Ice on the copper lineLow airflow or low refrigerant
Water around the furnaceA blocked condensate drain or a cracked drain pan
The AC will not turn on at allThe thermostat, a tripped breaker or the contactor
Refrigerant

Older Units and R-22

If your outdoor unit's label lists R-22, the system predates the industry's move to R-410A around 2010, and topping it up has become expensive. A small electrical repair on an R-22 unit can still make sense. A leak usually does not, so ask us to price the repair and a replacement side by side.

Condo Suites

Cooling in Etobicoke Condos

Live in one of Etobicoke's towers? Check two things before you call. First, whether your neighbours are warm too: if they are, the building's system is the likely cause and the property manager's job. Second, whether the equipment in your suite belongs to you under your declaration. If it does, such as a mini-split or another in-suite unit, we can repair it.

Tenants

Who Fixes the AC in a Rented Etobicoke Home?

With about 40% of Etobicoke households renting, many air conditioners here belong to a landlord. If your lease includes air conditioning, report the problem to your landlord first, since the landlord normally arranges the repair. Property managers and landlords can reach us 24/7.

Replace or Upgrade

A New AC, a Heat Pump or a Mini-Split

When the repair costs too much, a new central AC is $4,000 and up installed, or $44.95 a month as a rental. A heat pump cools the same way and heats most of the year, and for a house without ducts a ductless mini-split starts at $2,800. See air conditioners.

Common Questions

Etobicoke AC Repair FAQ

How much does AC repair cost in Etobicoke?
Most repairs are $350 to $950 before HST, and we agree the price with you before any work.
My condo is hot but the AC is running. What now?
Ask a neighbour whether their suite is warm too. If so, the building system is the likely cause and management handles it. If it is just you, check the filter and thermostat, then call us.
Can central air be fixed in a house with small ducts?
Usually the AC itself can be repaired. If rooms still run warm afterwards, we can suggest duct changes or a ductless unit for those rooms.
My outdoor unit is humming but not running. Is it serious?
Often it is a failed capacitor, a common and usually simple repair. Turn the system off so the compressor is not strained, and book a visit.
Do you service mini-splits in Etobicoke?
Yes, indoor heads and outdoor units of any brand. Ductless and heat pump repairs typically cost $400 to $1,200.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old AC?
For a capacitor or contactor, yes. For a compressor or a major leak, especially on R-22, price a replacement first. New central air starts at $4,000 installed.
When should I book an AC tune-up?
April or May, before the first hot week. It costs $150 to $250 and comes every year with a GT rental.
Can you repair the AC beside a semi with a narrow side yard?
Yes. We work in tight spaces and will tell you if the unit needs more room to breathe.
